Iris Receives Volunteer Award
President Pat recently had the pleasure of reading a congratulatory note from our MPP John O’Toole recognizing Iris Schickler for her 10 years of volunteer service. The citation commended her “commitment to citizenship” and paid tribute to “her energy and enthusiasm” while conveying the best wishes from the Durham Riding and citizens of Ontario. (Not too shabby – hmm?).
Iris’s response: “I am greatly honoured to receive the Volunteer Award. However, I also am humbled as I feel I really don’t do anything extraordinary. Just doing what needs to be done! Thanks you fellow Rotarians for your thoughtfulness”.
ESIS – The Economics of Staying in School
In April and May members of our club once again had the pleasure of delivering the full day ESIS program for grade 8 students at local schools.
Our society is fast-paced and change is abundant. As parents, we sometimes have difficulty keeping up with all the technical advances. Our children are a product of this age and need all the guidance they can receive to help them through the somewhat confusing journey they travel to reach adulthood.
As Rotarians, we are proud that we can do a small part to help many families give their children guidance to work through the maze of possibilities on their way of deciding what they want to do with their lives (no small task).
During the workshops we worked through the program, guiding the class through their exercise of budgeting based on average incomes and opening the eyes of those who had enormous expectations. We helped them to understand the importance of credit and how it could be misused and how they could suffer by using it without understanding the responsibility. We talked about how to make a good impression with potential employers and discussed moral issues they might have to face with friends or co-workers.
We don’t know if many will remember the entire program, but if even one suggestion or idea is remembered, then we have fulfilled our mission. As Rotarians, we have the opportunity to learn and to teach, and for anyone who hasn’t tried the program, try it. The reward is great!
Scrap Metal Day Another Success
On Saturday, April 24th Uxbridge residents came through and donated all kinds of scrap metal to clean up their homes and help a good cause at the same time. In total, the Rotary Club of Uxbridge raised over $5,000 from the more than 11 tons of scrap metal that was collected on the day and additional donations that were made previous and subsequent to the day. First Leaside Financial was also kind enough to donate the proceeds from the metal that was recovered as part of the demoltion of the former Co-op buildings in Uxbridge.
Area residents can continue to support the program by bringing their scrap metal to Port Perry Salvage at 132 Reach Industrial Park. Just tell them the donation is being made on behalf of the Rotary Club of Uxbridge. Additional information on vehicle donations and other donations can be obtained directly at 905-985-6121.
Funds raised during the event will be used to support Rotary’s many local and international projects.
It should also be noted that over 30 bicycles were collected for Africycle during the day and they will be used to support Africycle's program of helping residents of Malawi, Africa with affordable transportation.
Recent Donation
Through a contribution to Partnership in Service the club has helped to provide Uxbridge resident Marshall Homann with a new power wheel chair. This device makes it much easier for Marshall's family members (he is seen with his mother in the photo) help him in and out of the family van.
