  International Projects

With our first major project in 1998 we provided fresh water to a village in Nepal through donations and matching grants totalling over $25,000. We have provided desks to a school in Costa Rica, medical supplies to Cuba, and $10,000 for a hospital in South Africa to test children’s hearing, a step towards diagnosing tuberculosis. We have provided funding to support our local health care workers’ missions to Ghana, and to assist with the recent shipment of donated goods from Uxbridge to Afghanistan.

We continue to pursue our club’s 2012 Vision to support Africycle, AIDS and water projects in Africa, with a focus on Zomba, Malawi. We have partnered with Africycle, a community based bicycle sales/repair service, shipping bicycles to Zomba to provide much needed transportation. We support Dignitas International, an organization that has dramatically increased access to effective HIV/AIDS-related prevention, treatment, care and support in resource-limited settings through developing and sharing community-based solutions. In the past two years, through Africycle we have purchased and donated 70 bicycles to Dignitas to provide transportation for health care workers. We partnered with other Rotary Clubs to purchase a vehicle for Dignitas for ARV distribution.

Last year our incoming President, Chuck Taylor, joined the District 7070 Sweat Equity trip to Zomba, where the vehicle was presented.

Each year we purchase a ShelterBox, which provides emergency shelter, clean water and supplies for 10 people. These boxes are sent to disaster areas around the world, wherever they are most needed. This year we purchased two ShelterBoxes – one sent to flooded areas in Niger, and we have recently purchased a box to be sent to Haiti.

Our club has also committed to providing additional funding towards longer-term initiatives to help Haiti rebuild.

We provide annual funding to PolioPlus, a Rotary International project to eliminate polio from the world. Since 1985, the number of polio cases worldwide has declined by more than 99%. Read how Rotary has raised $107 million towards the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation $355 million challenge.

Following the tsunami disaster of December 2004, the club donated to the Solidarity in South Asia Fund providing aid to victims of the tsunami.
